Oakham is a proper market town rather than a commuter dormitory, with a twice-weekly market, independent boutiques, cafés and traditional pubs around the centre. Oakham Castle, with its remarkable Norman great hall, anchors the town's history. Schooling is a strong local selling point: Catmose College and Oakham Church of England Primary serve the state sector, while the independent Oakham School has a national reputation. For shopping, there's a large Waitrose and a Co-op in town, with Tesco and Aldi nearby in Oakham and Uppingham. Oakham railway station runs direct services towards Leicester, Peterborough and Birmingham, and the A606 and A6003 link to Stamford, Melton Mowbray and the A1. Rutland Water is only a few minutes away for cycling, sailing and walking, and the Hambleton peninsula has some genuinely good places to eat. It's a quiet, well-kept area with a strong community feel.
