Families have a decent choice of primary schools nearby, plus secondary options including Park Community School and Pilton Community College, and Petroc College offers further education. The A361 North Devon Link Road connects to the M5 at Tiverton, while Barnstaple railway station runs the Tarka Line to Exeter St Davids for mainline services. The Tarka Trail is a favourite for cycling and walking, and the beaches at Saunton, Croyde, Woolacombe and Instow are all within half an hour. North Devon District Hospital is close by. It's a practical, friendly town with genuine coast and countryside on the doorstep.
