Appledore is a working maritime village with a shipyard heritage, an arts scene and a genuinely lively year-round community. Appledore School serves primary-age children, with Northam and Bideford offering further primary choices and Bideford College the main secondary option; independent Shebbear and West Buckland are within driving distance. Everyday shopping is covered by the village Co-op and independent bakers, delis and butchers, while Bideford, around three miles away, has larger supermarkets including Morrisons, Asda and Tesco. The A39 Atlantic Highway links you to Barnstaple in roughly half an hour, where the Tarka Line runs through to Exeter St Davids. The Tarka Trail is on the doorstep for walking and cycling. Eating out is a real strength, from the Seagate and the Beaver Inn to seafood spots along the quay, and Instow, Westward Ho! and Saunton Sands beaches are all close by. Health services are based in Northam and Bideford, with North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple.
