Small Bedroom, Big Storage

Small Bedroom, Big Storage

New build bedrooms 3 and 4 are compact. Here's how to make every centimetre count.

5 min read

Floor to ceiling always wins

The single most impactful thing you can do in a small bedroom is go floor to ceiling. A standard wardrobe leaves 40-50cm of dead space above it — in a small room, that's storage you can't afford to waste. Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes use every vertical centimetre, and they make the room look taller and more streamlined.

In a new build with 2.4m ceilings, a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe gives you an extra shelf or two above head height — perfect for suitcases, seasonal clothes, spare bedding, and all the things that would otherwise end up in a pile on top of a freestanding wardrobe.

Sliding doors vs hinged in small rooms

In a small bedroom, sliding doors aren't just a style choice — they're a necessity. Hinged doors need 60-70cm of swing clearance, which in a room where the bed is 1m away from the wardrobe, means you'd be standing on the bed to open them.

Sliding doors sit flat against the wardrobe whether open or closed. You can put bedside tables, chairs, or even the bed itself right up to the wardrobe without blocking access. In a box room, this is the difference between a functional room and one that drives you mad.

Internal layouts that work hard

In a small bedroom, the internal layout matters more than the external design. Here's what works:

  • Double hanging rail: Two rails stacked vertically (one at waist height, one at eye level) doubles your hanging capacity. Perfect for shirts, tops, and folded trousers on hangers.
  • Pull-out drawers: More space-efficient than shelves for folded clothes. 3-4 internal drawers replace a chest of drawers entirely — freeing up floor space in the room.
  • Shoe rack at the bottom: A tilted shoe rack in the base of the wardrobe keeps shoes organised without taking up hanging space.
  • Shelf above the top rail: A single shelf above the hanging rail is perfect for bags, hats, and boxes. Use baskets to keep it tidy.
  • Full-width shelf at the top: The very top section (above 2m) becomes deep storage for things you rarely need — suitcases, winter duvets, Christmas decorations.

Mirrored doors and light tricks

Mirrored sliding doors are the ultimate small bedroom hack. They serve three purposes at once: wardrobe doors, full-length mirror, and they visually double the size of the room by reflecting light and space. In a north-facing new build bedroom with limited natural light, mirrored wardrobes make a genuine difference.

If full mirrored doors feel too much, consider a single mirrored panel in the centre with matt panels on each side. Or go for a light-coloured high-gloss finish which reflects light without the full mirror effect.

Internal LED lighting is worth the small extra cost. A simple sensor-activated strip light inside the wardrobe means you can find what you need without turning on the main bedroom light — brilliant for early mornings when your partner is still asleep.
