Larger supermarkets and a wider retail offer can be found in Barnstaple, which is close enough for a straightforward trip when needed.

Bideford's location is one of its strongest selling points. Westward Ho! — the only place name in the UK with an exclamation mark — is just a short drive away, offering a broad sandy beach, a long pebble ridge, and good conditions for water sports. The quieter estuary beach at Instow is equally accessible and has a more sheltered feel, popular with families. Inland, the Tarka Trail provides one of the region's best routes for cycling and walking, following the rivers Taw and Torridge through unspoilt countryside — and connecting directly with Bideford itself. For bigger weekend adventures, both Exmoor National Park and Dartmoor National Park are within reach, offering moorland walking, dramatic scenery, and a complete change of pace. The South West Coast Path also passes through the area, giving walkers access to some of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in England.
