Whiteley is unusual among Hampshire villages in that most of it is recent, planned and surrounded by genuinely old countryside. Whiteley Pastures and the ancient woodland of Botley Wood sit immediately to the north, threaded with bridleways and footpaths, while Swanwick Lakes Nature Reserve lies a short drive away — former brickworks clay pits now given over to ponds, meadow and wildlife walks. The village has its own community hub, playing fields and green space, plus the usual scattering of independent cafés and a couple of decent pubs in the surrounding settlements.

The M27 runs close by, putting Southampton to the west and Portsmouth to the east within straightforward reach, and the Hamble estuary and Solent shoreline are near enough for an evening at the water. Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve, on the coast beyond Fareham, is a well-known spot for birdwatching and a shingle beach walk. For a village built largely in living memory, it has grown into its landscape remarkably well.
