Dunfermline wears its history lightly for somewhere so old. Scotland's newest city was once its capital, and Dunfermline Abbey — burial place of Robert the Bruce — still anchors the centre, with the ruined royal palace alongside it. Just below sits Pittencrieff Park, the glen gifted to the town by Andrew Carnegie, who was born a few streets away in the weaver's cottage now preserved as a museum; the park's peacocks, glasshouses and wooded paths make it the obvious Sunday walk. Townhill Country Park, with its loch and waymarked trails, offers something wilder a short drive north, while the Fife Coastal Path and the Forth bridges are both within easy reach to the south. The city centre keeps a decent spread of independent cafés, pubs and everyday shops, and the M90 runs close by for Edinburgh and Perth. Carnegie's legacy lingers in a way few towns can match — free libraries, baths and parks that locals still use daily.
