Kirk Ella is one of the older villages strung along the low ridge west of Hull, and it has kept a distinctly separate feel despite how close the city is. The parish church of St Andrew anchors the older part of the village, surrounded by mature trees, wide verges and a mixture of handsome period houses and twentieth-century family homes. Day-to-day there are a few independent shops, a couple of pubs and the sort of village amenities that make errands easy on foot. The A164 runs nearby, linking south towards the Humber Bridge and north towards Beverley, with its minster, Georgian streets and racecourse, while Hull's Old Town, marina and the Deep are a straightforward drive east. Walkers and cyclists have the Yorkshire Wolds within reach, and the Humber foreshore paths closer at hand. Buses connect the village with Hull, Beverley and Goole. What Kirk Ella trades on most is quiet: it is a village people tend to stay in.
