The village has a village-hall-and-playing-field sort of rhythm, with a small cluster of everyday shops and a community centre at its heart rather than a high street. Taunton, a short drive east, supplies the rest: the county town's shopping streets, Vivary Park, the Somerset County Ground and the Brewhouse Theatre. Further afield lie Hestercombe Gardens, the Wellington Monument on the Blackdowns and the open moorland of Exmoor, while the M5 and A358 put Bristol, Exeter and the coast within easy reach. What surprises most newcomers is how dark the skies get here — the Quantocks keep light pollution low, and the stargazing on a clear winter night is remarkable.
