Sniperley sits on the north-western approach to Durham City, where housing gives way quickly to the fields and wooded valleys of central County Durham. The city itself is one of the most distinctive in England — a peninsula wrapped in a loop of the River Wear, crowned by the Norman cathedral and castle that together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with cobbled streets, the Palace Green library buildings and riverside towpaths spreading out below. Durham University gives the centre a lively, year-round feel, and there's a good mix of independent cafés, pubs and small shops alongside the usual high street names. The Durham Miners' Gala each July still draws enormous crowds through the city. Lanchester Road (the A691) runs past the development towards Consett and the Derwent Valley, while the A1(M) is close by for travel north and south. Beamish Museum, Hamsterley Forest and the North Pennines are all comfortable day trips.
