Ross-on-Wye is one of Herefordshire's most appealing market towns, sitting on a sandstone bluff above a bend in the River Wye. The hilltop Prospect gardens, laid out by local philanthropist John Kyrle in the seventeenth century, still give one of the best views in the county, and the arcaded Market House anchors a compact town centre of independent shops, cafés and a scattering of pubs. A regular market keeps the old trading tradition going.

The surrounding Wye Valley is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the landscape does a lot of the work here: canoeing and paddling on the river, the limestone crags and viewpoint at Symonds Yat, the ruins of Goodrich Castle a few miles downstream, and the vast woodland of the Forest of Dean just across the border into Gloucestershire. The Black Mountains lie to the west.

For drivers, the A49 runs north towards Hereford, while the M50 is close at hand and links through to the M5 for Worcester, Bristol and the wider motorway network.
