Horncastle is a proper working market town rather than a commuter dormitory, built where the River Bain meets the River Waring and still carrying traces of its Roman walls — the settlement was Banovallum, and fragments survive in the town centre. Georgian and Victorian frontages line the main streets, and the town has long had a reputation as one of the region's antiques hubs, with dealers, auction rooms and browsable second-hand bookshops alongside independent cafés, a handful of pubs and a regular market. The A158 runs through, heading west towards Lincoln and east to the coast at Skegness, which puts the Wolds on one side and the sea on the other. Walkers pick up the Viking Way as it threads north through the hills; Snipe Dales Nature Reserve, Cadwell Park's racing circuit and the pine-scented oddity of Woodhall Spa are all within an easy drive. The surrounding landscape is quietly dramatic by Lincolnshire standards — chalk valleys, big skies and lanes that empty out within minutes of leaving town.
