Dartmouth is one of the South West's most characterful towns, built in tiers up the steep west bank of the River Dart where it opens to the sea. The historic centre is a tangle of narrow streets and timber-framed buildings around the Boatfloat, with independent shops, galleries and a handful of long-established pubs and cafés, plus a regular market. Dartmouth Castle guards the river mouth, and the Britannia Royal Naval College looks down over the town from the hill. Passenger and car ferries cross to Kingswear, while the heritage steam railway runs along the Dart towards Paignton. The development sits on the Totnes road, with the A3122 feeding onto the A381 for Totnes and Kingsbridge, and the South Hams countryside, the South West Coast Path and the beaches at Blackpool Sands and Slapton all within easy reach. Each August the town gives itself over to the Royal Regatta, three days of rowing, racing and river crowds.
