Highwoods Vale

Breedon on the Hill is a proper Leicestershire village — stone cottages, a village hall noticeboard, and the extraordinary Church of St Mary and St Hardulph standing on the hill above the quarry, home to a celebrated set of Anglo-Saxon carvings and reached by a stiff walk that rewards you with views across the Trent valley. At the foot of the hill sits the village lock-up, a small round Georgian jail that has become the local landmark. The village centre is on your doorstep, and St Hardulph's C of E Primary School is the nearest primary, only a few minutes' walk; Ashby School is the closest secondary, a few miles south. Everyday needs are covered by a Sainsbury's Local a couple of miles off, with Melbourne Surgery the nearest GP practice in that direction. The A42 and A50 put Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Derby and the National Forest within easy reach, and Peartree station offers rail services towards Derby. Calke Abbey's parkland and Staunton Harold Reservoir are both close enough for an after-work walk.
