Ludgershall is a small, down-to-earth Wiltshire town sitting right on the edge of Salisbury Plain, with the Hampshire border only a short drive east. Its best-known landmark is Ludgershall Castle, the free-to-visit English Heritage earthworks and flint ruins of a Norman hunting lodge, which sit on open grassland in the middle of the town and double as somewhere to walk the dog. The town has long had a military character thanks to the garrison towns nearby, and that gives it a steady, settled feel alongside a modest high street of everyday shops, a couple of pubs and independent cafés. The real draw is the landscape: chalk downland, byways and bridleways open out immediately north and west, with Collingbourne Woods and the ancient beech avenues of Savernake Forest within easy reach, and Stonehenge around half an hour away across the plain. The A342 links the town to Andover and the A303, the main artery west towards Devon and east towards the M3.
