Bowburn sits just off the A1(M), which is the main reason the village has held its appeal: you can be on the motorway in a couple of minutes and heading north towards Durham and Newcastle or south towards Darlington and Teesside. The village centre is on the doorstep, a two-minute walk, with Bowburn Surgery equally close and Bowburn Primary School, the nearest primary, about half a mile off. Durham Johnston Comprehensive is the closest secondary, roughly four miles away. An Aldi is a short drive out, and Durham station, three or so miles away, puts you on the East Coast Main Line. Durham itself is the real draw — the Norman cathedral and castle on their peninsula above the Wear form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the riverbanks below make for a genuinely lovely walk. Closer to home, the old colliery landscape has been reclaimed into green space and footpaths, and Crowtrees Nature Reserve is a short stroll from the village.
