Is it realistic? Which homes have the space? Here's the honest guide.
6 min readYes — but it depends on the house type. A 2-bed starter home? Probably not without sacrificing a bedroom entirely. A 4-bed detached? Absolutely. Many 4 and 5-bed new builds come with a master bedroom large enough to partition off a walk-in area, or have a spare bedroom adjacent to the master that converts perfectly into a dressing room.
The key question isn't whether it's possible — it's whether it's the best use of your space. Converting bedroom 4 into a walk-in wardrobe means losing a bedroom on paper, which can affect resale value. But if you don't need the extra bedroom and the wardrobe adds genuine lifestyle value, it's one of the most satisfying upgrades you can make.
4-bed detached (e.g. The Bowyer, The Reedmaker, The Scrivener): These typically have a master bedroom of 15-20m² — large enough to section off 3-4m² for a walk-in without the bedroom feeling cramped. Some even have a doorway already positioned for an en-suite that could lead to a combined en-suite/dressing room.
5-bed detached: Often come with a dedicated dressing area or a bedroom 5 that's adjacent to the master. This is the easiest conversion — knock through or use the existing doorway.
3-bed semi/detached: Tighter, but if bedroom 3 is next to the master and you only need 2 bedrooms, the conversion works. You'll get a modest walk-in of about 2m x 2m — enough for a U-shaped layout with hanging, shelving, and a mirror.
L-shape: The most common in a new build conversion. Wardrobes along two walls, leaving the third wall and doorway clear. Works in rooms as small as 2m x 2m. One wall for hanging, one for shelving and drawers.
U-shape: Three walls of storage, open in the centre. Needs at least 2.5m x 2m to work comfortably. The luxury option — you can stand in the middle and reach everything.
Galley / corridor: Two parallel walls of wardrobes with a walkway between. Works if you're converting a narrow room or using a section of a larger bedroom. Minimum 1.5m wide for the walkway.
Island unit: For larger spaces (3m x 3m+), a central island with drawers on all sides and a glass or marble top is the ultimate statement. Expensive but transforms the room into something genuinely special.
Don't forget lighting — a walk-in wardrobe needs good lighting. Recessed ceiling spots (£200-£400 for an electrician to install) plus internal LED strips (£50-£150) make the space usable and feel premium.
